Monkey’s puzzle tree

    Botanical Garden is the most well-known tourist destination in Ooty. In 1847, Marquis of Tweedale laid the base of this garden, which is spread at an area of 22 hectares. This garden is situated at a height of 2400 metres above the sea level and has a group of rare coloured lilies, pinnacle trees and shrubs. There are many rare type of trees, one of which is 20 million year old vestige tree. It has make the sobriquet monkey’s puzzle tree because monkeys can’t climb this tree. Furthermore, there is an Italian manner garden which has a huge variety of flowers, greenery and plants. The garden, which also has a clear pond and a branch house, is popular among learners specialising in botany.

The Flower Show

    In the third weekend of May month, a flower show and presentation on plants is organised in this garden. The flower show is conducted for two days. The launch of the show is held on the first day and on the second day, rewards are distributed to winners of various competitions held in relation with flower show. About 250 exhibitors participate in various categories on the day of flower show. Several government departments and voluntary organizations also display their activities for the benefits of the flower lovers and travelers.

On the Show Days

    More than 50 varieties of preserved plants, 150 varieties of cut flowers, different kinds of tropical and moderate vegetables and tropical and temperate fruits are display by the participants. The Floral garland, Indian and Japanese flower preparations, Vegetable carving, Bonsai , Flower Rangoli etc., are the major attractions during the show days. The elite cut flower stalls from huge private and public gardens are also an appeal during the show days. 59 rolling cups, 250 cups and cash prizes are awarded to the best participants and exhibitors.

6 Sections of Garden

    Horticulture Department of the Government of Tamil Nadu seems after the maintenance of this garden. This garden features multicolored range of roses and imported shrubs. Todas or the familes of Nilgiri, which is known for its unique background and traditional values, inhabit the eastern hill of this garden. Botanical Garden is prominent for its ‘Summer Festivals’, which is held every year in the month of May. The present Botanical Gardens are separated into 6 sections namely Lower Garden, Italian Garden, New Garden, Conservatory, Fountain Terrace and Nurseries.
